Habitual to Disturbing Others
(Redirected from Habitually Uncaring)

What is the problem about?

Children are, by nature, chirpy and highly energetic. They seem to remain eternally busy doing something or the other. It is normal for children to make excessive noise or make a mess of all the articles at home or school. They play their pranks usually at times when guardians are not around.

There are, however, some children who are habitually bent on disturbing others with their noise or activities all the time. They leave no opportunity to disturb other children or even their parents. It becomes difficult for them to concentrate even on studies. They are unable to sit or stand at one place for a long time. Teachers have a tough time controlling these abnormally active children. Making disruptive noise, leaving their seats unexpectedly, speaking out of turn, disturbing classmates, and not completing classwork are typical characteristics of these children. Every day, they seem to bring in complaints from teachers back home.

Every time you take them to a relative’s house, they end up breaking utensils or artifacts kept inside your host’s house. Taking these children along by their parents to parties or restaurants creates much problem and causes parents to feel embarrassed.

In medical terms, these children are referred to as hyperactive children, and the condition is called Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). ADHD is a threat to children’s overall education. Therefore, it should not be taken lightly.

Causes

Heredity is considered to be the most important cause of ADHD. Besides heredity, several other factors too contribute towards children becoming hyperactive. Not getting a balanced diet is also a major cause of ADHD.

Smoking mothers have more chances of giving birth to children affected by ADHD. Head injuries and environment factors are other prominent cause of ADHD. A study in the UK has found that food additives can also cause behaviour changes in children, even in those who have no history of hyperactivity.

Solutions

ADHD is both a medical and behavioural problem and needs expert guidance. However, parents can do a lot in reducing the evidence of ADHD.

Do not force hyperactive children to sit for a long time. Make the children study at intervals planned by you. Give positive reinforcement whenever hyperactive children are quiet or under conscious direction and start a reward system for every abidance. Create short-term goals for the children so that they can realise more successes, and find activities which will absorb the need to be hyperactive.

Avoid asking questions to a child as to why, e.g., he has pushed the person next to him. This does not mean that the behaviour should be condoned. Treat such acts as a temporary lack of self-control.

Have the children keep a chart of how many times you have corrected them. Try role playing in a private conference. Switch roles with the children. Let you become hyperactive and let the children become the parents. This will allow them to observe how their hyperactivity appears to others.
