Rhematoid Arthritis

Rheumatoid arthritis causes the inflammation in the lining of the joints or other internal organs. Patients experience inflammation of the membrane lining the joint, which causes pain, stiffness, warmth, redness and swelling. The inflamed joint lining may also damage bones and cartilage. Joints may also lose shape and alignment, causing pain and impairment of movement.

Symptoms

Typical RA symptoms include inflammation of the joints, swelling, difficulty and pain in movement. Other symptoms include:
  • Loss of appetite
  • Fever
  • Loss of energy
  • Anemia
  • Rheumatoid nodules
Causes

Rheumatoid Arthritis is an autoimmune disease, in which the immune system attacks healthy joint tissues and causes inflammation and damage. Heredity is believed to play a part, although other genetic factors also affect the propensity to suffer from the disease.

Quick Facts
  • Rheumatoid arthritis affects 2.1 million Americans, mostly women.
  • Onset is common at middle-age, is more common in senior citizens, but also affects children and young adults.
  • 1.5 million women suffer RA, as compared to 600,000 men.
  • The U.S. spends about $86.2 billion a year on medical and other expenses on account of musculoskeletal disorders including RA.
Rhematoid Arthritis: The Modern View

Modern medical treatment of RA envisages symptomatic medications including NSAIDs, analgesics and corticosteroids and disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drugs (DMARDs). Ayurvedic treatment of Rheumatoid ArhritAyurveda attributes RA to aggravated vata dosha, a body humor that governs all physical movements and mental changes, controls the neuro-hormonal system and the musculoskeletal system as well. A weak digestive system and mental tension worsens matters. An Ayurvedic line of treatment would involve the pacification of vata dosha, the correction of the digestive system and general detoxification, supplemented with a diet-exercise plan.
