The universe
manifested from music, the rhythmic
sound of OM. In Brhaddesi, Rishi Matanga
says, "The entire universe is an embodiment
of music which pervades all nature."
There is nothing in nature that arouses
our attention or affects our feelings
so quickly as a sound and specifically
music. Music is the outpouring of the
heart’s feelings. Therefore, it can
touch a person’s innermost being. Sound
is of two types, namely inarticulate
(dhvanyatmaka) or articulate (varnatmaka).
Instrumental music is inarticulate and
vocal music is articulate. By the special
structure of the vocal organ a human
being is capable of making a greater
variety of tones than any other living
being and thus can express every emotion.

The songs of
the Samaveda are the precursor of all Indian
music. Krsna says, ‘Among the Vedas, I am
Samaveda’ (B.G. 10.22). The seven notes of
Indian music have various symbolic meanings.
They represent the mood of heroism, wonder,
anger, revulsion, fear, compassion, humor
and the erotic. Each note also represents
one of the seven constituent part of the body
according to Ayurveda, namely marrow, flesh,
pith, bone, semen, fat, and blood. Each note
activates and affects the different cells
of the body and mind. Therefore, music can
heal. Hippocrates, the Greek, who pioneered
the Western System of medicine used music
in the healing process. It is a proven fact
that music can, indeed, heal. The term ‘Mozart
effect’ has evolved from the fact that the
composer’s music has helped strengthen the
mind, reduce tension, enhance creativity and
heal the body of those who turned to it for
succour. |
| While
good music is highly beneficial, today’s cacophony
of loud noises in the environment aggravates
stress and will eventually destroy us. Loudspeakers,
traffic noise, and noise created by heavy
machinery are hazardous to health. In essence,
sound is power, it can heal or destroy. |
