10 Great Benefits of Abhayanga Oil Massage

In order to know the benefits of Abhangya, it is important to understand what it means. We do, at times, massage ourselves unconsciously. However, the practice of massaging oneself from head to toe with nice and warm oil lovingly is known as Abhangya. Ayurveda states that daily oil massage restores the balance between the three doshas of our body - pitta, kapha and vata. Here is a list of 10 benefits of Abhyanga.

  • This self-massage technique helps in nourishing the body and slowing down the ageing process considerably. It also promotes proper circulation of blood and lymph in the body.

  • This technique helps in bestowing individuals with good vision. When massaging your face, rub your palms together to generate warmth and place it gently over the eyes. With the fingers, gently wipe over the eye lids. Doing this will help in relaxing and promoting good blood circulation to the eyes.

  • Abhyanga stimulates the internal body organs and relaxes you improves blood circulation. Massaging regularly helps in maintaining healthy blood pressure.

  • This technique tones as well as strengthens the muscles & joints in the body. It helps in imparting firmness to the limbs, thereby strengthening your body.

  • Skin is the biggest sense organ in our body and this technique also benefits the skin. Massaging your skin with herbal oil prevents common skin diseases, removes dead skin cells and promotes new skin generation.

  • If applied to the scalp, oil massage helps in maintaining good blood circulation, which carries nutrients to the hair follicles and thus helps in giving you luxurious, soft and healthy hair.

  • Regular abhyanga reduces signs of ageing. Oil enters the pores of your skin and nourishes the dhatus which gives you a youthful look.

  • Ear problems can be prevented by pouring a little lukewarm sesame oil in each ear. Tilt your head to drain excess oil and massage the ear lobes and entire ear. This balances vata dosha and keeps your ears healthy.

  • For healthy nose, dip your fingertips in lukewarm sesame oil and sniff to let the let the oil enter each nostril. This will clear the mucus, lubricate the nostrils and strengthen your sinuses.

  • Apply a little oil to your navel and massage in broad circular motion. Oil application in navel helps in keeping your digestion strong and regularizes bowel movement.
