Ayurvedic Medicine For Nerve Pain

Neuropathic pain, also known as nerve pain, happens when there is a malfunction or damage in the nervous system. The pain is mostly a result of injuries, stroke, multiple sclerosis, or diseases such as diabetes. The pain results from faulty signals from the nerve fibres.

Your nervous system consists of two types: the central nervous system and the peripheral nervous system. The central nervous system consists of the spinal cord and the brain. The peripheral nervous system consists of the nerves that spread all across the body. The peripheral nervous system is the one that helps in sensing various external stimuli.

Around 30% of neuropathic pain occurs due to diabetes, but many other diseases like shingles, HIV/AIDS, and alcohol use disorder can cause it too.

How Does Ayurveda See Nerve Pain?

According to the Ayurvedic perspective, nerve pain happens because of the aggravation of the Vata dosha. In Ayurveda, it is the dosha that’s responsible for all the movement in the body. It is considered to be the leader of all three doshas because it is the one that’s responsible for the movement of the other two doshas. Since movement involves the commands from the nervous system, an imbalance in this dosha causes malfunction of the nervous system and, therefore, problems like nerve pain.

This imbalance can happen because of Agni Mandya, which means a low digestive fire because of various dietary and lifestyle habits or incidents like injuries and diseases like diabetes, HIV/AIDS, etc. This can lead to accumulation of Ama, meaning toxins in the body’s strotas (channels), which might lead to insufficient deposits of nutrients in the nerves that can lead them to malfunction.

Symptoms Of Nerve Pain

Common signs that you might have nerve pain include:

  • A pain that happens for no apparent reason. It can feel like a burning, stabbing, or electrical shock-like pain, tingling, numbness, or a “pins and needles” sensation.
  • Allodynia: When normally painless stimuli - like cold, pressure, or contact with the skin become painful. It indicates hypersensitivity of the nerves.
  • Hypoalgesia: The opposite of allodynia. This is the case when normally painful stimuli aren't painful. Ex, a pinprick should hurt, but it’s not.
  • Hyperalgesia: When a painful stimulus hurts more than it normally should. For example, a pinprick hurts more than it should.
  • Dysesthesia: Any unexpected sensation that might feel strange, unpleasant, or painful.
  • Insomnia: Disturbed sleep because of pain might cause difficulty in sleep patterns and, therefore, insomnia.

When Should You Consult a Professional Care?

Nerve pain is a severe issue that should not be ignored. You should contact a healthcare professional at Jiva Ayurveda and book a free appointment as soon as you notice any of the symptoms mentioned above. Immediate attention is needed to diagnose the cause of the pain, as early diagnosis can help control and reduce the condition better.

Causes Of Neuropathic Pain

The causes for nerve pain can vary from various medical conditions to injuries, as well as various lifestyle routines. Common causes for nerve pain include:

Medical Conditions:

  • Diabetes: This is the leading cause of nerve pain because, over time, high sugar levels can cause damage to the nerves.

  • Conditions like:
  1. Shingles (a rash infection caused by to reactivation of the varicella-zoster virus, which has remained inactive for years following a chickenpox infection, usually due to a weak immune system),
  2. HIV/AIDS
  3. Lyme disease (a bacterial infection spread to humans by infected ticks),
  4. Autoimmune disorders (when the immune system of the body malfunctions and mistakenly starts to attack healthy cells of the body), like multiple sclerosis, rheumatoid arthritis, or lupus.

  • Other chronic illnesses like kidney disease, liver disease, thyroid problems, and some cancers can also lead to neuropathic pain

Injuries:

  • Traumatic injuries like an accident, a fall, etc., can cause nerve damage.
  • Surgeries can also cause nerve damage.
  • Compression of the nerves due to conditions like herniated discs, tumors, or carpal tunnel syndrome (pressure on the median nerve in the wrist, which can result from repetitive hand and wrist motions like typing or using vibrating tools, and anatomical factors like a wrist fracture or smaller carpal tunnels) can cause nerves to malfunction because they put pressure on them.
  • Stroke or brain injury can also cause neuropathic pain as it damages the nerves in the brain and the spinal cord.

Lifestyle factors contributing to nerve pain:

  • Alcoholism: High consumption of alcohol can cause nerve damage.
  • Exposure to toxicity, such as heavy metals like lead or mercury, can damage nerves, too.

    • Certain medications, especially chemotherapy agents used in cancer treatment, can also damage nerves.

  • Deficiency of vitamins, especially B vitamins (B1, B6, and B12) and vitamin E, which are responsible for nerve health, can cause nerves to weaken and malfunction.

Other causes include genetic factors, and in some cases, the cause remains unknown, i.e., idiopathic causes.

Ayurvedic Causes:

  • As discussed earlier, the ayurvedic cause for nerve pain is said to be the aggravation of the Vata dosha, which is responsible for the functioning of the movements in the body, which also includes the nervous system.
  • The main reason for its aggravation is the accumulation of Ama (toxins) in the body’s srotas (channels), causing insufficient reach of nutrients to the nerves, leading up to their weakness and ultimately, their malfunctioning and the resulting pain.
