What is Kashaya Vasti?

Kashaya Vasti is a specialised form of Vasti therapy, one of the five principal procedures of Panchakarma in Ayurveda. It involves the rectal administration of a medicated herbal decoction (kashaya) prepared using aqueous extracts of specific medicinal herbs, along with honey, rock salt and medicated oils or ghee.

In Ayurvedic practice, Vasti is traditionally considered particularly beneficial for balancing Vata dosha, which governs movement, nerve function and elimination in the body. Kashaya Vasti is generally recommended as part of a structured Panchakarma programme under professional supervision.

Why Kashaya Vasti?

Kashaya Vasti is described in Ayurveda as a therapeutic enema that allows herbal preparations to be administered through the rectal route. In modern physiological terms, rectal administration may allow partial systemic absorption of certain substances and may bypass some aspects of digestion.

In Ayurvedic theory, this therapy is believed to:

  • Help regulate Vata imbalance
  • Support detoxification processes
  • Improve bowel regularity
  • Assist in managing chronic disorders linked to Vata aggravation

However, it should always be performed by trained professionals, as improper administration may cause complications.

Who Needs Kashaya Vasti?

Kashaya Vasti treatment involves enema using medicated decoction. Enema involves injecting medicated decoction into the rectum. It is good for pain management, detoxification, gastric problems and paralysis.

What Happens During a Kashaya Vasti Session?

Kashaya Vasti is performed in three stages:

1. Purva Karma (Preparation Phase)

The patient may undergo preparatory procedures such as internal or external oleation (Sneha therapy). The Ayurvedic physician assesses the patient’s constitution (Prakriti), dosha imbalance and overall health before selecting the appropriate herbal decoction.

The required instruments are sterilised and lubricated to ensure minimal discomfort.

2. Pradhan Karma (Main Procedure)

The patient lies in the left lateral position with knees gently flexed. The medicated decoction is administered slowly into the rectum using a specialised enema apparatus.

This position supports comfortable administration and helps facilitate the distribution of the liquid within the lower intestine.

3. Paschat Karma (Post-Procedure Care)

After administration, the patient rests in a supine position. Gentle abdominal massage may be performed. The decoction is retained for a specified duration before natural evacuation. Dietary guidance is provided following the procedure.

How is Kashaya Vasti Performed by Jiva Experts?

At Jiva Ayurveda, Kashaya Vasti is performed by skilled Ayurvedic therapists with specialised training in traditional techniques. Each session begins with a comprehensive assessment by an Ayurvedic doctor to understand the patient’s prakriti, dosha imbalances and medical history. Based on this assessment, the herbs to be used in Kashaya Vasti are carefully selected and prepared with precision.
During the session, the patient is required to lie in the left lateral position. The medicated decoction is then inserted via the rectum.
