According to the teachings of Ayurveda, Yoga is the best way to improve blood circulation in the body and to ensure that the dhatus (tissues) receive adequate blood and oxygen. It is this excellent blood flow to the shira (blood vessels) of the face that keeps the skin looking youthful and dewy by keeping skin cells younger longer and also by replacing the dead skin with fresh, healthy skin.

Matsyasana (The Fish Pose):

This asana is great at easing fatigue, menstrual pain and anxiety. It also boosts digestion by stretching the organs of the stomach and a healthy digestion means a healthy elimination of ama (toxins) from the body, thereby ridding your skin of sallowness and giving it a beautiful glow.

How to do this asana:

  • Start by lying flat on the floor.

  • Raise your hips, placing your hands beneath them with the elbows bent and balanced on the ground.

  • Lift your torso off the ground, keeping your head tilted on the ground.

  • Hold for 5 breaths

  • Repeat 6 times.

Bharadvajasana (The Bharadvaja’s Twist):

This spinal twist is great for improving digestion along with strengthening the spinal cord and back muscles. Improved digestion means good excretion of ama (toxins) from the body which gives you a vigorous glow.

How to do this asana:

  • Start by sitting with your legs bent under you.

  • Swing your right leg over your left and place it next to your left hip.

  • Twist your torso to the right by twisting your tailbone away from your right leg.

  • Place your left hand against your right knee, further twisting your tailbone.

  • Hold for 30 seconds to 1 minute before returning to your start position.

  • Repeat on both sides 5 times.

Sarvangasana (The Shoulder Pose):

This pose is a bit on the tougher side and requires practice to be executed perfectly. It is packed with benefits for the entire body and strengthens all your internal organs. Practicing it causes a rush of blood to your face, rejuvenating the blood cells and giving you a glow.

How to do this asana:

  • Start by lying on your back with your hands on your side.

  • Lift your legs, hips and back in an upward motion, supporting your back with your hands.

  • Start moving your hands upward, slowly straightening the back and legs. Ensure your weight is supported by your hands and shoulders, not your neck and shoulders.

  • Hold the pose for 30 seconds to one minute, while breathing steadily.

  • Slowly lower yourself, starting with the back, the hips and then the legs.

  • Relax for one minute and repeat 6 times.
