A Doshic Guide to Skin Type According to Ayurveda

According to Ayurvedic principles, balancing the three doshas – Vata, Pitta and Kapha - is the key to the health and wellness of all the systems of the body, including the skin. The secret to keeping the doshas in balance differs based on the predominant dosha of each individual. Therefore, it is pertinent to evaluate the skin type of a person before making a diagnosis or suggesting a skin care treatment.

Vata Constitution:

Skin Quality: Fine, delicate, dry & flaky, easily dehydrated Common Problems: Eczema, wrinkles and fine lines

Quick Solutions:

  • Use beauty products that nurture and moisturize the skin

  • Practice abhyanga (oil massage) every day

  • Include a little ghee in your diet to fight dryness

Pitta Constitution:

Skin Quality: Sensitive, prone to breakouts, irritation, and inflammation Common Problems: Sunburns, pigmentation, rosacea

Quick Solutions:

  • Use products that are cooling in nature, like aloe vera and sandalwood

  • Protect your skin from the sun and use rose toner to soothe the irritation

  • Avoid hot, spicy, and deep-fried food

Kapha Constitution:

Skin Quality: Thick, oily skin, large, open pores, tends to retain water Common Problems: Acne, blackheads, fungal infections

Quick Solutions:

  • Use a gentle exfoliant to tackle the greasiness

  • Cleanse your skin twice a day

  • Have plenty of fruits and vegetables to clean out the ama
