Alopecia and Pattern Baldness: Causes and Preventions

In Ayurveda, complete hair loss is known as Khalitya. Indralupta is another form of hairfall that appears in patches. The causes of Alopecia and Pattern Baldness are well-described in Ayurveda. Here are some of the main causes as described in Ayurveda:

Abundance of Tejas

The heat energy

Tejas is a vital heat energy or force in our body which responsible for the metabolic process. Present in the adequate amount, it makes our skin radiant, and our hair gleaming shine. However, the excessive regulation of Tejas ama in the scalp causes rashes and hair loss. It also one of the main causes of stress which further sheds of hair.

Rakta dosha

Impurities in blood

Rakta dosha is the fourth dosha which plays an important role in the composition of the body. The blood carrying excessive kapha dosha closes romkupas (hair follicles) and stops the growth of hair. This causes the hair dry, brittle, and breakable which leads to Indralupta or Alopecia.

Vihara Manobhigata

The mental stress

Vihara Manobhigata refers to the mental stress, fear and anger which vitiates the Pitta (fire) and Vata Dosha in our body. Where the increase in Pitta dosha leads to improper digestion, the dryness of the Vata dosha flushes the moistness and softness from the follicles of the scalp. This is one of the reasons why people suffer from Alopecia and pattern baldness at a young age as the body is unable to provide the hair with required nutrition and nourishment.

How to prevent it?

  • Apply herbal oils like gunja tail, karanj tail, or neeli bhringraj tail on the scalp thrice a week with. These oils nourish the scalp by pouring deep into the hair follicles.

  • Take the decoction of medicinal herbs such as Manjisthadi Akshaya which balances all the three doshas in blood. Consult to an Ayurvedic expert before consumption as every human has a unique constitution.

  • In case, you have dry, you can take a teaspoon full of ghee on empty stomach in the morning. It will nourish your hair from within.

  • Practice yoga thrice a week as yoga practices stimulate the hair scalp for proper blood circulation and oxygen flow.
