Are Your Pearly White Teeth Under Attack? Build a Strong Defence System with Ayurveda

Are you taking good care of your teeth? Or do you daydream with the toothbrush in your mouth? Before that lazy brushing of yours comes back to haunt you and demand the sacrifice of your pearly whites, Ayurveda comes to rescue!

Here are a few steps recommended by Ayurvedic Dinacharya practices to keep your teeth healthy and bright.

  • Begin by brushing your teeth with Ayurvedic toothpaste or tooth powders that are astringent, pungent or bitter in taste. Traditionally, Ayurveda recommends using neem, liquorice, karanja and karvira sticks as a toothbrush. Their antibacterial properties prevent and alleviate dental diseases.

  • Scrape the tongue using a tongue scraper made up of metals like gold, silver, copper, or brass. This helps remove mucus and it also refreshes your breath and improves taste. Practice tongue scraping three to four times a day.

  • Cleansing herbs keep your mouth fresh, free from odours, and enhance your taste buds. After the process of tongue scraping, chew herbs like clove or betel leaf to freshen the breath and eliminate odours.

  • The last step in oral hygiene in Dincharya is gargling. Gargle two to three times a day with warm water. Adding a little bit of sesame seed oil can strengthen the jaws and remove remaining food particles.

Tending to our oral health has a profound and far-reaching impact on our overall health. If you’re new to these Ayurvedic practices, try incorporating just one new addition at first and gradually include the other steps.
