Ayurvedic Remedies for High Cholesterol Levels

Cholesterol is a fatty acid which is produced in the liver and is used for many body functions, such as synthesizing vitamin D, bile acids, hormones and building cell membranes. It is bad only if imbalanced. The factors which increase the cholesterol level are poor diet, obesity, smoking, diabetes and lack of exercising.

Ayurveda views cholesterol as a lubricator of various circulatory channels of the body which are termed as Shrotas. The shrotas should be flexible and elastic to be healthy and functional and cholesterol plays a role in maintaining it.

Ayurveda does not term cholesterol as bad in itself but can be of harm if ama (metabolic left over that settles like a toxin in the fat tissue) is present in the body. If not cleared ama becomes a dangerous type known as amavisha which gets mixed with fat tissue and damages the shrotas. This leads to high cholesterol levels, stroke, and high blood pressure.
