5 Ayurvedic Steps to Eliminate Ama

Information By Dr. Keshav Chauhan

Ama is a primary cause of diseases in Ayurveda. Ama can be both physical and mental. It happens when the food we eat does not get completely digested and eliminated. Ama is the mother of all diseases and is known to create arthritis, heart problems, digestion problems, weakness, fatigue and mental dullness.

What Exactly Is Ama?

Ama is formed when the digestive fire, known as Agni, is impaired. When food is not properly digested, it turns into a sticky, heavy residue rather than being fully absorbed and utilised. This residue circulates in the body and may deposit in tissues, joints, or organs, disrupting normal physiological functions.

Unlike modern medical toxins (such as chemicals or pathogens), Ama is a broader concept. It represents metabolic waste that the body has failed to process efficiently.

How Does Ama Form?

Ama may develop due to:

  • Overeating or eating before previous meals are digested
  • Heavy, oily, or highly processed foods
  • Irregular meal timings
  • Poor gut health
  • Chronic stress
  • Lack of sleep
  • Sedentary lifestyle

When digestion slows, the body cannot transform nutrients properly, leading to the accumulation of metabolic waste.

Signs and Symptoms of Ama

According to Ayurvedic texts, common signs include:

  • Persistent fatigue or heaviness
  • Coated tongue (especially in the morning)
  • Bloating and indigestion
  • Brain fog
  • Joint stiffness
  • Foul body odour
  • Sluggish bowel movements

Ama is believed to block the body's subtle channels (srotas), which may eventually contribute to inflammation and disease if not addressed.

Main Reasons for Ama Formation in the Body

Ama forms in your body when the digestive power becomes weak, and food is not properly digested. This leads to a build-up of toxins in the body. The main causes of Ama formation are:

  • Poor Diet – Oily, spicy, very cold, or highly processed foods increase Ama.
  • Irregular Eating Habits – Eating when not hungry or having late-night meals can increase Ama.
  • Excess Sugar or Junk Food – High sugar and fructose intake hinders digestion.
  • Stress and Lack of Sleep – Mental stress and insufficient sleep weaken digestion.
  • Low Water Intake – Drinking insufficient water leads to toxin accumulation, increasing Ama.

How to Improve Digestion and Reduce Ama

When digestion is strong, Ama formation is reduced. Some simple ways to improve digestion include:

  • Drink Warm Water – Start your morning with warm water on an empty stomach to kickstart digestion.
  • Use Ginger – Eating ginger or adding it to tea can improve digestive power.
  • Small and Light Meals – Eat food in smaller portions and chew slowly.
  • Fennel and Cumin – Chewing fennel or cumin seeds after meals aids digestion.
  • Exercise and Light Activity – Walking, yoga, and light exercise boost digestive strength.

Ayurvedic Herbs to Eliminate Ama

Ayurveda offers several herbs that help remove Ama from the body and improve digestion:

  • Triphala – A well-known Ayurvedic detox, it removes toxins through stools and urine.
  • Neem – Cleanses the blood and purifies the body.
  • Aloe Vera – Improves digestion and detoxifies internally.
  • Fennel & Ginger – Enhance digestion and reduce Ama.
  • Amla (Indian Gooseberry) – Rich in vitamin C and antioxidants, it boosts digestive strength.

Easy Home Tips to Detox Ama

Ama can also be safely reduced at home. Some easy tips include:

  • Juices and Herbal Tea – Lemon water, ginger tea, aloe vera juice.
  • Plenty of Water – Drink 2–3 litres throughout the day.

Ayurveda recommends five steps to eliminate Ama. For best results, follow these five steps under the guidance of an Ayurvedic doctor.

Nidaan Parivarjaan (Avoiding Causes)

The first step in eliminating ama is to avoid the causes that is causing ama. Avoid eating before the previous meal is properly digested. Eat small, easy to digest meals. Do not eat refrigerated, cold or stale foods. Eating in front of a TV is also not recommended. Do not eat when you are feeling angry, depressed or emotionally unstable.

Ama Pachaan (Digesting Ama)

the second step in the process of eliminating ama is to digest the ama that is already present in your body. Aam Pachak Churna is a combination of Ayurvedic herbs which is very effective in this process. You can also chew fennel seeds and sip lukewarm water to help in the process.

Agni Deepan (Reigniting Digestive Fire)

Ama makes the digestive fire slow and weak. Agni deepan is natural process to enable the natural mechanism of your body to reignite the digestive fire. For this you can chew on a piece of fresh ginger and drink a cup of lukewarm water 30 minutes before meals. Take your meals on specific intervals and take a semi-solid meal for a few days to rekindle the digestive fire.

Strotoshodhan (Cleansing Channels)

As a result of following the above steps, the ama in your body will move towards the excretory system. Toxins are eliminated from the body through faeces, urine and sweat. In Ayurveda, elimination is done by the Malavahi Strotas. Take isabgol and Triphala every day before going to bed at night. Drinking a cup of milk of warm milk with a spoon of ghee mixed in it is also helpful. Certain herbal preparations help in this process, but it is highly advisable to consult your doctor at this stage.

Panchakarma

Panchakarma is a specialized branch of Ayurveda which detoxifies and strengthens the natural process of the body. Vamana and Virechana are processes of Panchakarma that your doctor may recommend based on your health status. Abhyanga (whole body massage) stimulates the lymph glands which will help in removing toxins through sweat.

It is also very important to stay hydrated to eliminate toxins from your body. Drink freshly squeezed fruits juices without adding sugar. Packaged juices are not healthy. Organic neem juice and aloe vera juice should be in your kitchen. You can drink these healthy juices whenever you feel the urge for a beverage. Herbal teas are also good.
