Avoid These Food Combinations to Prevent Diseases

Virrudh Ahaar, or wrong food combinations, can cause diseases. Ayurveda prohibits combining certain foods. When you consume incompatible foods, it agitates the digestive tract and causes an imbalance in your doshas.

Below are some of the food combinations that should be avoided:

Do not eat fruit with your meals:

Fruits contain simple sugars that are digested quickly. Thus, they do not stay for a long time in the stomach. If you combine them with other foods that are rich in fats, proteins, and starch, it will stay in the stomach for a longer period of time as the other food require more time for digestion. So if you eat a fruit with or after a meal, the sugar will stay in your stomach longer and ferment, causing gas.

Liquids and solids:

Liquids tend to pass away instantly into the intestines, taking away all the digestive enzymes and inhibiting digestion. It is suggested that no liquid be taken with solids. Liquids should be had at least 20 minutes before a meal and also not immediately after a meal.

Banana and Milk:

This is considered one of the heaviest and toxin-forming combinations in Ayurveda. It creates a heaviness in the body and slows down the mind. If you like milk-based banana smoothies, make sure that the banana is overripe and add cardamom and nutmeg to stimulate digestion.

Tulsi and Milk:

If you are consuming Tulsi capsules or tablets for any respiratory condition or infection, it is better to avoid having milk soon after this. Keep a gap of at least 30 minutes between the two.

Green Tea or Black Tea with Milk:

Tea contains flavonoids called catechins, which are beneficial for your heart. Milk has a group of proteins called caseins which interact with the tea and reduces the number of catechins. Avoid having tea with milk since they effectively counter each others benefits.

Avoiding these food combinations will prove to be beneficial for your health in the long run. Eating fresh foods and drinking small sips of warm water during a meal can help in digestion.
