Manage Bipolar Disorder with Panchakarma

Mental illness is an issue that plagues a majority of the population. Bipolar disorder is one illness that is often misdiagnosed and brushed off as mere mood swings. In this case, the mood swings go from depression to mania.

According to Ayurveda, illnesses, both physical and mental, arise when the body’s balance is disturbed and restoring the balance is key in healing the body and the mind. Ayurvedic remedies such as panchakarma have proven helpful in managing the extreme mood swings caused by Bipolar Disorder. This therapy flushes out toxins (ama) from the body promoting physical and mental balance.

Panchakarma

This therapy, which translates to ‘five actions’, consists of five techniques which relax the body and mind. The techniques are vaman, virechan, basti, nasya and raktamokshan. These steps reduce stress and restore the body’s natural balance by flushing out bodily toxins in different ways.

1. Vaman

In this therapy, you’re given emetic medicines and decoctions that enable vomiting to flush out all the toxins from the body.

2. Virechan

In this step, the bodily toxins are flushed out from the bowels using natural purgatives.

3. Basti

This technique involves managing oils and decoctions through the rectum for enema. This therapy is great for vata-dominated conditions.

4. Nasya

Here, the head and shoulder areas are lightly massaged followed by adding nasal drops into both nostrils. This cleanses the whole head area and heals headaches, sleep disorders, neurological disorders and more.

5. Raktamokshan

This therapy cleanses blood by letting out vitiated blood from the body using different techniques – shastra, anushastra, jalauka and more.
