The Ayurvedic Approach to Prostate Health

An unhealthy prostate can eventually become enlarged which may result in prostate cancer. Since prostate health can become a serious problem for men in their middle age, it is important to take steps to maintain a strong and healthy prostate.

Ayurvedic Tips for Healthy Prostate:

  • Balance Apana Vata. It is responsible for the downward flow of energy which occurs during urination.

  • Stop excess ama(toxins) from being produced in the body.

  • Strengthen the immune system.

  • Cleanse the dhatus (bodily tissues), especially rakta (blood), mamsa (muscle) and meda (fat).

Tips to keep the prostate healthy:

  • Keep yourself hydrated. This ensures the urine doesn’t become too concentrated. Don’t urinate in a hurry and make sure your bladder is emptied completely.

  • Maintain a moderate body temperature because if it drops too much, it leads to urine retention.

  • Regulate your bowel movements. Constipation unbalances the apana vata leading to accumulation of ama in the blood tissue.

  • If you have to sit for long periods of time, take short breaks regularly to stretch. This normalizes the movement of energy to the prostate.

  • Perform daily abhyanga (Ayurvedic massage) to pacify the apana vata.

  • Avoid alcohol and caffeine as they create imbalances in the rakta dhatu (blood).

  • Include badaam (almonds) and akhrot (walnuts) in your diet. They are tri-doshic in nature and balance all three doshas.

  • Eat sweet and juicy fruits for a healthy rasa dhatu (nutrient fluid) that promotes the creation of ojas, strengthening the immune system.
