RBC Count Low or High: Ayurvedic Interpretation of Blood Health

Information By Dr. Keshav Chauhan

Sometimes, a person feels completely fine and has no major health problems, but when a blood test is done, it suddenly reveals that the RBC count is low or high. Then questions start coming to mind—what does this low or high RBC mean, will it cause harm, and if everything feels normal, why is this happening? Many people ignore it and do not pay attention until symptoms like tiredness, dizziness, shortness of breath, or heaviness in the body start appearing.

What is RBC Count?

RBC means Red Blood Cells. These are cells present in our blood that play a very basic and important role in the body. The main function of RBCs is to carry oxygen from the lungs to different tissues and organs and to remove carbon dioxide waste from the body. This process helps maintain proper oxygen supply and supports the normal functioning of body cells, which keeps the body healthy. When the RBC count is within a normal range, the body remains healthy. If the RBC count becomes low or high, the body is affected, and overall health starts getting disturbed.

When RBC Count Is Low, What Does the Body Feel?

When the RBC count is low, there are usually no sudden or very strong symptoms at first. That is why people often ignore it, thinking it is just normal tiredness or weakness. Generally, people with low RBC count experience the following in daily life:

Tiredness even without work
People with low RBC count feel constant tiredness. Even after proper rest or full sleep, they feel as if they have done a lot of physical work. After sleeping or resting, they do not feel relaxed, which happens due to low RBC levels.

Shortness of breath while climbing stairs
People with low RBC count feel breathless while climbing stairs or doing even small activities. Their breathing becomes heavy, and they feel as if they have done hard physical work. This happens because the body feels a lack of oxygen.

Dizziness and heaviness in the head
Feeling dizzy after waking up or feeling heaviness in the head is also due to low RBC count.

Fast heartbeat
Sometimes the heart starts beating fast even without doing any activity. It feels as if the person has been running or doing intense exercise. This can also happen because of a low RBC count.

Difficulty in concentration
People with low RBC count find it difficult to focus on one thing. They are not able to concentrate properly, their mind keeps wandering, and they are unable to feel relaxed.

Irregular periods in women
Women with low RBC count often experience changes in their menstrual cycle. Periods may come early or late, flow may be very heavy or very light, and periods may be accompanied by pain, tiredness, irritability, and weakness.

What Happens When RBC Count Is High?

When the RBC count is high, there are usually no very strong or immediate symptoms. There is often no major visible impact at first, so people tend to ignore these signs. Many people even think that having a high RBC count is beneficial, but this is not true. When RBC is high, the body can show certain signs, such as:

Heaviness or pressure in the head
People with high RBC count often feel heaviness or pressure in the head. Medicines may give instant relief, but the problem can come back again because the RBC level is still high. The heaviness improves temporarily, but the root cause remains, so head pressure or heaviness keeps returning.

Tingling in hands and feet
While sitting for a long time, people may feel tingling or numbness in their hands and feet. This is also a symptom of high RBC count, but people usually ignore it, thinking it is a small or normal issue.

Excessive sweating

People with high RBC count tend to sweat more. They often assume it is due to heat, but even when the weather is normal, they still experience excessive sweating. High RBC count can be a reason for this.

Sleep disturbances
Due to a high RBC count, proper sleep may not come easily. Even after closing the eyes for a long time, sleep does not come. If sleep does come, it breaks in between. This leads to ongoing sleep problems.

Restlessness and irritability
A high RBC count can cause restlessness and irritability. People feel uneasy, get angry easily, and feel disturbed without any clear reason. They become more irritable and uncomfortable around others.

How Does Ayurveda View RBC Count?

According to Ayurveda, the RBC count is not merely a number in a blood report. It is understood as a sign that something inside the body is not balanced properly. Ayurveda believes that the formation of Rakta Dhatu is directly connected to the digestive system. If digestion is not proper and food is not digested well, the body is not able to form healthy blood. When digestion becomes weak, the doshas get imbalanced. This imbalance affects both the quantity and the quality of blood.

If RBC levels are low, it means that somewhere inside the body balance is disturbed. Fatigue is felt, nutrition is lacking, and weakness appears. The body is not digesting food properly, due to which it is not able to absorb essential nutrients. On the other hand, if RBC levels are high, it indicates an imbalance related to Pitta or Kapha dosha. In this condition, the blood becomes thick, which affects proper blood flow in the body. According to Ayurveda, this condition cannot be corrected only by taking medicines. Medicines may give temporary relief from symptoms, but the root problem remains. Ayurveda believes that by making changes in daily lifestyle, following the right diet, and using certain herbs, RBC levels can be maintained naturally, and overall health can be improved.

Ayurvedic Approach to Balancing RBC Count

First Digestion Improves, Then RBC Starts Improving

According to Ayurveda, when the digestive system is weak and food is not digested properly, nutrients are not absorbed well by the body. Because of this, the body does not get the raw material needed to make healthy blood. Gradually, the RBC count starts becoming low. That is why Ayurveda first focuses on improving the digestive system so that blood formation can happen properly.

When Toxins Are Removed, Blood Formation Becomes Smooth

When doshas and toxins remain accumulated in the body, they block proper blood flow and nutrient supply. Due to this blockage, nutrition does not reach the tissues properly, and blood circulation gets disturbed. Ayurveda removes this accumulated waste through detox and purification methods. Once the blockage is cleared, nutrients start reaching the blood and the whole body, and the formation of healthy RBCs begins.

When Pitta Dosha Is Balanced, Blood Quality Improves

When pitta dosha becomes imbalanced, heat and irritation increase in the body, which affects the quality of blood and RBCs. Ayurveda works to balance pitta by cooling and nourishing the body with a proper diet and lifestyle. This helps stabilize blood quality and keeps RBC count balanced.

Proper Diet Supports Healthy Blood Formation

When the diet is balanced and the body receives adequate minerals, proteins, and nutrients, overall health improves. Both the quality and quantity of blood remain better. Ayurveda advises correcting the diet and, when needed, provides herbs and natural medicines so that RBC levels remain balanced.

A Regular Routine Helps the Body Enter Self-Repair Mode

When daily routine is proper — including timely meals and proper sleep — the body becomes fully relaxed. In this state, the body naturally enters a self-repair mode and starts correcting internal imbalances on its own. That is why maintaining a regular daily routine is considered very beneficial.

Reducing Stress Has a Positive Effect on RBC Levels

Long-term stress and overthinking negatively affect blood health. Ayurveda focuses on reducing stress through therapies and relaxation techniques. When both mind and body feel calm, the healing process becomes faster, and RBC levels start improving naturally.

Light Physical Activity Improves Blood Circulation

Ayurveda recommends light physical activity or simple exercises to help balance RBC count. Regular movement keeps blood circulation smooth and active. When circulation improves, RBC formation also becomes better and remains balanced.

When Should RBC Count Not Be Ignored?

The problem starts when people ignore the signs of low or high RBC count, thinking they are caused by simple fatigue, overwork, or daily stress. Many people assume these symptoms are normal and do not take them seriously. However, if you notice these signs and become aware in time, early correction can help keep your RBC count balanced. Some important signs are:

  • Persistent fatigue
If you feel excessive tiredness for a long period, even without doing much physical work, and it feels as if your body is completely drained or aching, this should not be ignored.

  • Frequent dizziness
If you experience dizziness repeatedly, it is important not to overlook it. This can be a sign of RBC imbalance.

  • Frequent illness or slow recovery
Falling sick often, getting small infections repeatedly, or taking longer than usual to recover can indicate an imbalance in RBC count.

  • Headache or heaviness in the head
Ongoing headaches or a constant feeling of heaviness in the head can also be related to RBC imbalance and should not be ignored.

If these symptoms appear together or continue for a long time, it is important to pay attention and take timely action instead of ignoring them.
