Dark circles usually change appearance rather than causing physical discomfort. Their colour, depth, puffiness, and whether they are symmetrical can hint at whether pigment, vessels, or shadowing is dominant.
Brown, blue, purple, or grey under-eye colour: The shade varies with skin tone and whether pigment, vessels, or shadowing is dominant.
Hollowing or tear-trough shadow: A groove below the lower eyelid can create a dark shadow even without excess pigment.
Puffiness: Under-eye swelling can make surrounding shadows more obvious.
No pain or itching in uncomplicated cases: Simple dark circles usually change appearance without causing discomfort.
When symptoms are being assessed, details such as sleep, allergies or rubbing, family tendency, sun exposure, skin changes, and any swelling often matter as much as the symptom name itself.
Pigmentation, visible blood vessels, shadowing from anatomy, and allergy-related changes can all create dark circles. This is why a symptom checklist can guide a consultation but should not be used as a self-diagnosis tool.
In Ayurveda, the quality, timing, location, and combination of symptoms are considered together. The clinician may also consider constitution, digestion, aggravating factors, and the relevant Dosha/Dhatu/Srotas framework where it is clinically appropriate.
Ayurveda has no single modern one-to-one diagnosis for every type of dark circle. A clinician may consider sleep (Nidra), Vata-Pitta patterns, and the condition of Rasa/Rakta Dhatu, but visible under-eye colour alone cannot establish a doshic diagnosis.
This language can add useful context during an Ayurvedic consultation, but it should not be used to bypass modern diagnostic criteria or investigations when they are indicated.

For sudden, severe, or rapidly worsening symptoms, emergency assessment is safer than waiting for a routine consultation.
One symptom alone rarely confirms dark circles under the eyes. More useful clues are the pattern of brown, blue, purple, or grey under-eye colour, hollowing or tear-trough shadow, puffiness, how long they have been present, and whether they are getting worse. Ayurvedic terminology can help describe the individual's presentation, while appropriate examination and investigations are what confirm or rule out important medical causes.
For dark circles under the eyes, look for a pattern: what is new, what is persistent, what is worsening, and what is occurring together. That pattern is more clinically useful than matching yourself to a single symptom on a list.
