8 Natural Home Remedies to Fight Constipation

According to Ayurveda, constipation occurs when Vata’s cold and dry qualities disturb the colon and inhibit its proper functioning. The treatment is to add warmth, hydration, and lubrication to the system to counter the excess Vata. Below are some of the natural ways to help relieve constipation:

Warm water and herbal teas:

Drinking at least 80 ounces of water or herbal tea is recommended. Warm and hot fluids are the best as they balance the Vata’s cold quality. It is also important to drink the majority of these fluids a little after meals.

Organic oils:

Increase the quantity of organic oils like ghee, sesame oil, and olive oil in your diet. This will help lubricate the tissue and curb constipation.

Pineapple Juice:

Drink pineapple juice to remove excess Vata from the colon. It is also recommended to dilute juices with water.

Ghee:

Drink a cup of milk with 1-2 tsp ghee before bed to get relief from constipation.

Flaxseeds:

Boil 1 tbsp of flaxseed in a cup of water for 2-3 minutes, cool and drink the water along with the seeds before bed and at least 1 hour after dinner.

Fruits:

Fruits are hydrating and rich in fiber. Bananas, apples, soaked raisin, prunes, and peaches are especially beneficial in case of constipation. Make sure to eat the fruits at least one hour before or after other meals.

Triphala:

This is an ayurvedic herb which balances all three doshas and has a particular affinity for the colon. Take two Triphala tablets with a glass of warm water or half teaspoon Triphala powder with warm water about half an hour before bed.

Psyllium:

Psyllium husk is a natural source of both soluble and insoluble fiber that acts as an effective bulking agent in the colon and supports healthy and regular stool. The husk can be consumed by soaking it in warm water or milk.

Constipation is an uncontrollable problem with many underlying causes. The above mentioned remedies can be done in the comfort of your own home, and most of them are even supported by science. Constipation can lead to ama formation and many other serious diseases.
