Home remedies to get relief from irritable bowel syndrome

IBS is an extremely painful gastro-intestinal problem which leads to constipation, diarrhea, bloating, abdominal cramps, indigestion, influenza, insomnia, interstitial cystitis or mucus in the stool, etc. The root causes of IBS are stress, anxiety, excessive consumption of carbohydrate beverages and bad food habits are considered the major reasons for IBS. However, Ayurveda describes IBS as the imbalance or improper functioning of Agni, accumulation of Ama, or the colon disturbance caused by an increase in any dosha; Vata, Pitta, Kapha.

So, how do you treat it? After consulting with Ayurveda experts, we have jotted down three effective home remedies that can relieve you from irritable bowel:

Slightly increase the consumption of ginger (Adrak):

Being a natural laxative, ginger provides relief in constipation by reducing the inflammation and promoting the digestion process. Chew it raw or drink ginger tea twice a day.

Drink flaxseed tea at night:

Boil one teaspoon of flaxseed (Alsi ke beej) in a cup of water and add lemon to prepare a fresh flaxseed tea. For effective results, drink it at night. It is anti-inflammatory and laxative that softens the stool and promotes proper digestion of food.

Psyllium Husk with a yogurt:

In case of diarrhea and constipation, taking one full teaspoon of Psyllium husk (Isabgol) along with fresh yogurt after the meal is beneficial. It’s a dietary fiber which absorbs the excess water for a normal bowel movement. Therefore, it should be consumed in a limited quantity only.
