Natural Remedies for Ulcerative Colitis Symptoms

Ulcerative Colitis is an Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) that causes inflammation of the colon’s inner lining and the rectal wall and makes it a flare up. The flare-up causes ulcerative colitis symptoms like abdominal pain, irregular bowel movements, discolored stool, rectal bleeding, unexplained weight loss, etc. The disease sometimes results in life-threatening complications that affect other parts of the body, including the joints, skin, and eyes.

In Ayurveda, ulcerative colitis is known as Pittaja Grahani. It is caused by an aggravation of Pitta dosha in the body. Factors that imbalance Pitta include eating while watching TV or walking, excessive heat or exposure to the sun, excessive alcohol and smoking, excessive mental activity, skipping meals, consuming spicy, sour or stale foods, etc. Ayurveda offers natural treatment for ulcerative colitis that focuses on balancing the aggravated dosha and eradicate the illness symptoms from its root through personalised root-cause based treatment.

Natural home remedies for ulcerative colitis

Ayurveda also offers natural remedies that can help manage ulcerative colitis symptoms in the initial stage. Although home remedies cannot cure the condition, they may help a person find relief from the symptoms and flare-ups.

  • Have 1 glassful of buttermilk with ¼ teaspoon of turmeric powder, a pinch of roasted cumin seed powder and rock salt to taste. Have this twice a day with breakfast and lunch. Avoid having it with the evening meal.
  • Make a powdered preparation of cloves, cinnamon, green cardamom and asafetida (heeng). Have 1 teaspoon of this powder twice a day with water.
  • Make a preparation of ¼ teaspoon of nutmeg powder (jaiphal), ½ teaspoon powdered Indian gooseberry fruit (amla) and ½ teaspoon of celery seeds. Have this at bedtime with water.
  • Make a preparation of raisins, bamboo camphor (banslochan), cinnamon, celery seeds, coriander and cumin in equal amounts. Have 1 teaspoon three times a day with water.
  • Have 1 teaspoon of licorice root powder (mulethi) with water 2-3 times a day.
  • Take pomegranate seeds with rock salt.
  • Make a cold infusion of 1 teaspoon coriander powder in one glass of water. Keep it for the whole night and drink it in the morning on an empty stomach.

While these natural Ayurvedic remedies can help you manage the condition, your primary goal is to stick with the treatment plan suggested by the Ayurvedic doctor. Better relief depends a lot on getting early treatment for ulcerative colitis and not mistaking home remedies as an alternative for proper root cause treatment.
