Ayurvedic Diet & Lifestyle Tips to deal with Sciatica

Sciatica is known as ‘gridhrasi’ in Ayurveda. The root cause is considered to be poor digestion, which leads to the buildup of ama (toxins) in the channels of the body. Some factors that could be triggering this are given below:

Common Causes for Sciatica

  • Not urinating or excreting when the urge hits you

  • Intake of vata-imbalancing food like chana dal, masoor dal, peanuts, etc.)

  • Having excess of foods that are light, dry, cold pungent, bitter, or astringent

  • Improper administration of an enema

  • Sitting or lying in the wrong position

  • Lifting heavy objects or serious fall or injury

Diet & Lifestyle Advice for Management of Sciatica

  • Since buildup of toxins is the main cause of sciatica, managing the condition starts with having a carbohydrate-rich diet that can facilitate proper bowel movement.

  • Have plenty of fiber as well, by including green leafy vegetables and fruits like apples and bananas in your diet

  • Avoid eating heavy meals. They take a long time to digest and put a lot of pressure on the lower back region.

  • Light exercises like swimming, gentle yoga poses, walking, and even slow jogging can help manage sciatica better.

  • Hot and cold compress on the affected area, taken alternatively, can relieve the pain to a great extent.

Ayurveda recommends several ways in which you can manage sciatica, from herbs that cleanse the body and prevent buildup of toxins to medicines to restore digestive health. There are also preparations that tone, nourish, and soothe the nervous system and restore balance to the body.
