Information By Dr. Keshav Chauhan     Medically Reviewed by Dr.Partap Chauhan

There are a lot of people out there who do not feel lunch is like a break anymore. They open their respective lunch boxes on their desks beside their laptop and continue to reply to emails or complete their work while munching. On the surface level, it may look like the person is trying to save time by doing this, but doing this might affect your digestion, your energy, and your state of mind as well. Lunch is not provided just to refill our stomachs but to take a small pause or

break from the long working hours and so that our minds can be at peace and slow down as well.

Eating while working affects our digestion

It is very possible that if you look at your screens or even think about work, you may not pay  attention to the food in front of you, and in this case you might chew on the food quickly, take

From an Ayurvedic perspective, how you eat is equally as important as what you eat. It supports and encourages eating in a good mood and a peaceful mood so the body can focus on digestion.

We might end up eating more than we realise

Has it ever happened to you that you had already finished your lunch and then wondered how it vanished so quickly? While eating in front of the screen, it becomes difficult to track how much we are eating.

While your attention is focused on the laptop or your work rather than the meal, you may not feel satisfied with the amount of food you have eaten or you may end up eating more than required

Because the attention is on the screen rather than the meal.

When you eat food in peace, and without any distractions, you get to notice the taste, the quantity of food you want to have, and the texture of the food. The food can make you feel satisfied and at peace.

The body needs a break too

While working for too long in front of the screen for too long the body needs to get a little moment so that we can feel relaxed; otherwise, the body can tense up. It is important to take short breaks for lunch even if you exercise regularly; long breaks can make your body stiff and tense.

The best opportunity to utilize it is to get up from the desk at your respective lunch breaks and to stretch, go for a walk, and simply move before having your meal. These small moments can make a big difference and make the second half of your shift more relaxed and comfortable.

It affects your mental health

Your work doesn’t always become more productive just because you skip lunch or do it in your break time. In fact, if you skip your breaks to complete the workload, you can feel mentally tired.

The brain works more properly if the body gets proper breaks and peace to think again and properly, especially after concentrating for several hours. It allows your brain to switch off for a while.

No long breaks are required, but only a 20-minute walk can do wonders and increase your productivity, and will make you feel fresh.

What does Ayurveda say?

Ayurveda gives equal importance to how and in what manner we should follow when we eat. Traditionally, it is said and proven that it is very important to eat food in a calm and peaceful environment without any distractions.

It will not be good for your digestion if you do not follow these rules and eat in a stressed environment, and it can make you even sicker. It also encourages eating your meals at the proper time and maintaining healthy eating habits.

This doesn’t mean you need to follow a strict routine for your diet, but a staple diet and not a complicated environment can be very beneficial for you and make you mindful.

How to make your lunch better?

It is not necessary to completely change your routine, but a few habits can go a long way and are easy for you to follow.

It is important to eat away from your laptops or screens and be in a healthy environment. If you can keep your phone away as well for better digestion and to focus on the quality and quantity of your meals. Chew and take as much food as you need instead of gulping it.

Do not straight get back to your work as soon as you complete your meal; it is important to take a walk around your office or to sit with your colleagues and spend quality time.

Treat your lunch break as an actual break and not an excuse to complete the work faster than the rest of your team. You do not need to feel guilty for stepping away from your work for some time. It is very important to take care of yourself when you can and so that you can focus better.

Conclusion

Eating lunch at your desk may seem harmless to save your time and complete your work, but every day it can mean that you are missing out on the opportunity to rest and function well, move, and eat in a better place. From rushed hours and poor awareness to mental tiredness, the habit can worsen for you.

No perfect routine is needed. Keep it as basic as needed and try to put your work aside for a few minutes, get a proper lunch break, and give your body exactly what it needs.
