Have you ever noticed that after a night of poor sleep, you feel like eating chocolate, cookies, and other sugary products? Have you ever wonder you reach to sugary products even you are not hungry? While it can be seen as a simple food craving, your sleep habit could be playing a bigger role than you realise.

Sleep is very important for our physical and mental health, and for overall well-being. Poor sleep can lead to changes in your food preferences and hunger. It makes sugary products appealing to you when you are tired or want instant energy.

But have you noticed why this happens, and how it can be fixed?

Why Does Too Little Sleep Make Sugar Cravings Feel Stronger?

You must have noticed that when you don't get enough sleep, you crave chocolate, biscuits, and other sugary products. But have you ever wondered why this happens?

This is because sleep plays an important role in maintaining your energy levels, appetite, and food preferences. When you do not get enough sleep, your body and brain react in many ways, making sugary products more appealing to you.

Here’s the reason why this happens:

  • Hormonal imbalances: Our body is totally dependent on two hormones to control how much you eat, and they are, Ghrelin ( I’m hungry hormone) & Leptin (I’m full hormone). When we don’t get enough sleep, these hormones become imbalanced and make us feel hungrier even after eating, which makes us shift to sugary products for quick energy.

  • The brain needs more energy: When you need sleep but you stay awake, your body needs more energy than usual, i.e., glucose (sugar), and hence craves carbohydrates or sugar-rich products because these are easily digested and provide instant energy to the body.
  • Increase in stress hormones: Improper sleep leads to an increase in stress hormones. Due to this our mind force us to eat comforting food to get some energy that is the reason why we crave for the more sugar.

Due to these reasons, when we get too little sleep, sugar cravings feel so much stronger.

How To Reduce Sugar Cravings?

A lack of sleep triggers various biological changes in your body, leading to sugar cravings the next day. When we can not get enough sleep, our body undergoes some hormonal changes.

The hunger hormone increases, sending signals to eat more food.

The fullness hormone drops, making it harder to feel satisfied.

Cortisol level increases by which stress level increases and crave for sugary products.

To fix this, there are some simple steps to reduce sugar cravings.

Immediate Solution

These are the steps we can take right away to reduce sugar cravings.

When you feel that you haven't had enough sleep, you should take these steps:

  • Start your day with protein- and fiber-rich meals so that your digestion slows down and keeps your stomach full so that you do not crave sweets for the whole day.
  • Try to not skip or limit your meal because this leads to more sugar cravings.
  • Stay hydrated all day. Drink plenty of water because dehydration leads to hunger and more sugar cravings.
  • Try to wake up early in the morning to get some sunlight and do some light exercise in the morning, this will help your biological clock to keep the excess glucose (sugar) out of your body.

Long-Term Solution (Sleep And Cravings)

  • Try to get proper sleep of 7 to 9 hours without any disturbance to reset your brain, body, and hormones.
  • Free your bedtime of screens, keep yourself free from screen minimum of one hour before sleep.
  • Limit your caffeine intake; try to drink at least 6 to 8 hours before bedtime, so that it doesn’t ruin your sleep.

Performing these simple steps leads to perfect sleep and reduces your sugar cravings.

Ayurvedic Perspective

As per Ayurveda, improper sleep does affect your sugar cravings. It disrupts the body’s natural balance of Vata doshas, weakening the digestive fire (Agni), and spikes hunger and stress levels.

Sleep is an essential part of human life; it governs the human body and regulates its overall well-being. Improper sleep leads to an increase in Vata dosha, which manages the nervous system and mind. An aggravated Vata dosha causes mental fatigue, which increases sugar cravings.

Insufficient sleep also dampens the digestive fire (Agni). Weak agni leads to indigestion, which leads to the creation of toxins (Ama). This causes energy levels to drop and triggers a strong craving for sweets. To fix this, simply get some good sleep (at least 7–9 hours), drink plenty of water, and eat your food slowly, chewing it thoroughly.

Conclusion

Poor sleep can make sugar cravings stronger. These effects vary from person to person, and factors such as stress and eating habits can also trigger sugar cravings.

Prioritising good sleep,  eating balanced food, and maintaining a regular healthy daily routine can help and support a better appetite and overall wellbeing. To fix this, you just need to fix your sleep cycle and your food intake (make it rich in protein and fiber) and keep yourself hydrated.

Taking care of your body and these small things can control your sugar cravings and support your overall well-being.

Ayurveda balances blood sugar by balancing the body’s doshas through some herbs, by maintaining a proper balance diet, a structured daily routine that includes yoga in it.

To manage sugar cravings naturally, you need to balance your blood sugar level and change your daily habits. For example, drink enough water, get proper sleep, and eat protein- and fiber-rich food.

Sugar cravings cannot mean that you are diabetic; constant sugar cravings give signals of an imbalance of blood sugar and insulin resistance.

Food rich in protein, fibre, healthy fats, and natural sweetness can stabilize your sugar cravings.

Yes, eating too much sugar can cause poor sleep. It spikes blood sugar levels and increases stress hormones, which leads to poor or worse sleep quality.
