IL-6 Test High: Can Ayurveda Help Control Systemic Inflammation?

Information By Dr. Keshav Chauhan

Sometimes, you feel completely normal, but after getting a blood test, you find something unexpected in the report. It may be a term you have never heard before or never took seriously. Then you notice one line in the report, IL-6 High. It is natural to feel confused at this point. You start wondering what it actually means. People often try to understand what IL-6 means after seeing it mentioned in their reports.

As understanding improves, concern about the underlying health condition often increases. build. A high IL-6 level typically indicates the presence of inflammation somewhere within the body. This inflammation may not have caused any clear symptoms and could have been silently building up for a long time without you noticing it. In Ayurveda, this kind of condition is often understood as silent inflammation, where the body is under stress from within, even though everything seems normal on the outside.

What is IL-6?

IL-6's full name is Interleukin-6. It is a protein produced in the body that plays an important role in the immune system and helps the body fight infections. It acts as a messenger that signals pain, swelling, or infection within the body. When we fall sick or when we get a viral or bacterial infection, the body recognises it and sends a message to the immune system to fight the infection. This message travels through the blood, and IL-6 also works as a messenger. It spreads in the blood and makes the system aware. It does not work only during illness. Normally, it also takes part in regular body activities and gives its contribution there as well. It helps in regulating swelling and helps the body recover when a fever comes.

When this protein is made in the right amount in the body, it is very beneficial. But if its level increases, it means there is swelling somewhere in the body. If this swelling does not heal at the right time, it can be harmful to the body. An increase in IL-6 not only shows swelling. Because of high IL-6 levels, other diseases can also happen, such as diabetes, arthritis, or problems related to joints. If it is not at a proper level, many diseases can develop in the body. It also works like a protector that protects us from new diseases and keeps the immune system active. But if the level of this protein increases, it can be harmful. That is why keeping it at the right level is very important for our body.

What Do People Actually Feel When IL-6 Is High?

When IL-6 levels increase, the symptoms are often mild and not immediately noticeable. Many of these symptoms appear similar to common daily health complaints. and are therefore often overlooked as warning signs. Many people complain that they feel tired. Even after taking a rest, the body still feels heavy. Food does not digest properly. Mood swings start happening. There is stiffness in the body, such as in the neck and shoulders. Sometimes the stiffness is mild, and at other times the pain suddenly increases.

Increased irritability over minor issues is frequently observed. After some time, they feel restless. Anxiety and uneasiness are felt. They are not able to concentrate properly on anything. New health problems start appearing. The body’s power to fight diseases becomes weak. Hormonal changes also happen. Sleep problems start. Sleep does not come properly at night, and in the morning, there is laziness and tiredness throughout the day. These symptoms are often not recognized as being linked to elevated IL-6 levels. As a result, they are frequently ignored until the condition worsens. Later, this turns into a bigger problem.

Why Does IL-6 Become High?

Elevated IL-6 levels are often linked to everyday factors that are commonly overlooked. Many times, when pain, injury, or swelling stays in the body for a long time, we take it lightly and ignore it. To heal this, the body keeps producing IL-6 again and again. For some time, this increase is helpful and works fine, but later it starts creating problems. Long-term stress is also a major reason for increased IL-6. When we are under constant tension and stress, the mind stays overloaded. The body takes this as a danger signal and activates the system, due to which IL-6 starts increasing. That is why nowadays stress is considered one of the main causes of high IL-6.

Wrong eating habits also play a role. Outside food, fried food, junk food, and similar items increase inflammation in the body. Because of this, the immune system gets activated repeatedly, and IL-6 levels start rising. Obesity or belly fat is another reason for increased IL-6. Fat cells themselves increase IL-6 in the body. Lack of sleep is also a major cause of high IL-6. When sleep is not complete, the body is not able to relax and repair itself properly. Due to this, inflammation increases in the body, and IL-6 levels go up. Some diseases, such as arthritis, diabetes, heart disease, and autoimmune disorders, also show high IL-6 levels. Overall, IL-6 does not increase without a reason. If IL-6 is high, it means that something is wrong inside the body, and the body is not healthy.

Ayurvedic Approach to Managing High IL-6

Ayurveda does not focus on fixing just one report or number. Instead, it focuses on correcting the imbalance happening inside the body. Ayurveda interprets elevated IL-6 as a sign of internal inflammation and dosha imbalance. It sees high IL-6 as a sign of inflammation, ama (toxins), and imbalance of doshas in the body. That is why the Ayurvedic approach works at the root level, not just on suppressing symptoms. First, Ayurveda tries to understand why ama (accumulated toxins) has formed in the body. Wrong eating habits, stress, lack of sleep, and weak digestion are the main reasons. When digestion is weak, the body is not able to digest food properly, and this undigested matter starts increasing inflammation. This condition slowly leads to high IL-6. For this reason, the first step in the Ayurvedic approach is to improve digestion.  Light, warm, and easy-to-digest food is advised. Very cold, fried, packaged, and sweet foods are reduced.

As digestion improves, internal inflammation in the body starts reducing on its own. The second major focus is balancing Vata, Pitta, and Kapha. High IL-6 is mostly linked with Pitta and Kapha imbalance. Increased Pitta causes heat and inflammation in the body, while increased Kapha leads to heaviness and stiffness. Through an Ayurvedic lifestyle, proper daily routine, and food, these doshas are balanced. In Ayurveda, Panchakarma therapies are also considered very important. Depending on the need, therapies like Virechana, Basti, Udvartana, or Abhyanga are given. Their purpose is to remove accumulated toxins from the body and reset the immune system. When the body becomes clean from within, inflammation reduces, and IL-6 slowly comes under control.

Mental balance is a major part of Ayurvedic treatment. Stress, fear, and anxiety further increase inflammation in the body. That is why meditation, pranayama, and proper sleep are emphasized. Sitting calmly for some time every day, taking deep breaths, and reducing screen time also help in controlling IL-6. Ayurvedic herbs also support this process. Many herbs are known to calm inflammation and balance the immune system. These are given according to a person’s body type and condition, so that the body is not stressed. The most important thing is that Ayurveda looks at high IL-6 as a lifestyle-related condition. This means that without changing daily habits, long-term improvement is not possible. The right food, sleeping on time, light activity, and mental calmness are the real treatments in Ayurveda. In simple words, Ayurveda does not suppress high IL-6. It slowly brings the body into a state where it can heal itself. That is why the results may appear slowly, but they last for a long time.

When High IL-6 Should Not Be Ignored

High IL-6 does not mean you need to panic every time, but there are some situations where it should not be ignored at all. IL-6 is the body’s warning signal. If it keeps coming high again and again or stays high for a long time, it means something inside the body is not right. For example, if IL-6 increases during an infection or fever and then comes back to normal, this is a normal thing, and there is no need to worry. But if IL-6 remains high for many days even after the fever or infection is gone, it points toward chronic inflammation. In such a situation, it should not be ignored.

The second situation is when IL-6 is high, and you feel constant tiredness, body pain, swelling, or stiffness. Even after resting or doing very little work, you still feel tired. Pain in the joints after waking up in the morning and feeling low or dull are also signs. These symptoms should not be ignored, as they can lead to bigger problems later. The third situation is related to mental health. If you feel restlessness, anxiety, lack of sleep, low concentration,  poor focus, frequent mood changes, demotivation, or a depressed feeling, and these problems stay for a long time, they should not be ignored. Over time, they can turn into serious issues. High IL-6 can disturb the chemical balance of the brain.

The fourth and very important situation is when you already have diseases like diabetes, arthritis, or heart disease, and along with that, your IL-6 is high. This condition is considered serious and should not be ignored. Sudden weight gain, fat getting stored around the waist or back area, is also a situation that should not be ignored. Most importantly, falling sick again and again, getting infections frequently, and taking a long time to recover mean the healing process is slow. This situation is also dangerous, and Persistent elevation of IL-6 requires timely medical attention.

How Long Does Improvement Take and What Is the Cost?

Many people have this question about how much time it takes for high IL-6 to improve. In Ayurveda, whatever therapy or treatment is given takes time, because Ayurveda works on the root of the disease and removes it from the root. It does not work only by giving temporary relief from the surface. The duration of improvement depends on the patient’s condition and the treatment approach. Normally, within 2 to 4 weeks, people start noticing improvement. They begin to feel relief from problems like tiredness, heaviness in the body, joint pain, and insomnia, and IL-6 starts coming into the normal range. People who have old inflammation-related problems that have been present for a long time may take a little more time to feel relief. This completely depends on the patient’s condition.

In Ayurveda, high IL-6 is not reduced directly. Instead, work is done on the cause behind it. The focus is on understanding why IL-6 is increasing — whether there is inflammation in the body, any disease, or any old injury, because of which IL-6 is rising. That cause is treated. If we talk about the cost, it depends on the Ayurvedic center, the patient, and the type of treatment. Generally, the expense comes between 3000 and 4000, and if Panchakarma therapy is also added, the cost can increase further.
