  • Pain that comes in waves: It tightens, relaxes, and tightens again. Very typical of spasms.
  • Twitching or slight shaking of the muscle: Some people actually see the muscle jump under the skin.
  • Pain spreading to nearby areas: If nerves are involved, the pain may move toward the hips or even the legs.
  • Worse after sitting too long: The back tightens more when you get up after a long period of sitting, driving, or even standing.
