Ayurveda Is More Than Herbs: Why Daily Behaviour Matters

Information By Dr. Sapna Bhargava     Medically Reviewed by Dr.Partap Chauhan

When we think of Ayurveda, the first thing that comes to mind is herbs.

We often think Ayurveda is all about herbs, but is that true?

No, this is not the truth. Ayurveda is not only about herbs; it is a way of understanding how our daily habits influence our overall well-being.

Herbs are a part of Ayurveda, but Ayurveda is not just about herbs.

It's all about how we sleep, when we wake up, how much or what quality of food we eat, and how we manage stress; all these activities contribute to Ayurveda.

For overall well-being, our daily behavior matters.

Ayurveda encourages us to maintain balance between our work life and lifestyle.

Ayurveda Is More Than Herbs

Ayurveda is a traditional practice that has been going on for centuries. Ayurveda combines the mind, body, lifestyle, diet, and daily activities.

Herbs play a role in Ayurveda, but they are not its foundation.

Ayurveda focuses on daily routine (Dinacharya) and adapting habits as per the seasons.

Ayurveda is all about maintaining the balance between mind, body, and spirit.

For example, regularly skipping meals, living with constant stress, and not getting enough rest can affect how we feel. Rather than focusing on just one habit, Ayurveda promotes overall well-being.

Ayurveda treats the whole body; it focuses on the root cause rather than focusing on the symptoms, and it focuses on preventing and curing disease, with the help of herbs and other traditional practices.

The Importance Of A Consistent Daily Routine

A healthy lifestyle does not necessarily require a complicated schedule. Sometimes, a simple and easy routine, such as waking up at the same time, getting quality sleep, the amount and quality of food we consume, and how we manage stress, work, and lifestyle, is enough for a healthy lifestyle.

The Importance of a consistent daily routine on our health is:

  • A consistent daily routine helps us align our daily habits with the natural body clock, which helps us maintain a healthy lifestyle and overall well-being.
  • Eating, sleeping, and waking up at the same time helps improve our digestion; it prevents the buildup of toxins (Ama), which leads to sluggishness and illness.
  • A consistent healthy daily routine helps in reducing stress, which helps in improving our immunity and stamina.
  • Gentle morning practices help us stay calm and also provide us with mental clarity.
  • Ayurveda focuses more on prevention than on treatment; it advises living one's daily routine in a balanced way so that illnesses do not occur in the first place. Rather than focusing on treatment after an illness has developed, it emphasizes preventing illness from arising.

Ayurveda focuses on small habits to prevent illness and helps in maintaining overall well-being.

Eating Mindfully

Ayurveda deeply focuses on healthy meals and mindful eating.

While Ayurveda certainly focuses on healthy food, it does not mean focusing solely on the ingredients themselves; it also includes factors like meal timing, digestion, and appetite in the concept of healthy and mindful eating.

In today’s busy world, a meal is something that we have while performing multiple tasks, such as scrolling through, doing some office work, or rushing through something.

Mindful eating focuses on eating a meal properly without any rush, to nourish our body.

It focuses on eating slowly, chewing food properly, and listening to the body’s fullness signals, hunger, and appetite.

Ayurveda states that everyone should eat food as per their capacity.

Mindful eating helps us to make a connection with our food for nourishing our body, mind, and spirit. By engaging our senses, such as becoming aware of taste and textures, and listening to our body signals such as hunger and fullness signals. This practice helps us to nourish our body, mind, and spirit and maintain overall well-being.

Small Habits Can Make A Meaningful Difference

The best thing about Ayurveda is that it focuses on patterns for well-being, not just on occasional actions.

On the one hand, you are taking herbal treatments and medications, but on the other hand, you are neglecting your body’s signals such as sleep, nutrition, and stress management.

When you follow a complex routine, you will feel exhausted and not want to continue it for more than three days. But if you add small habits such as waking up early, hydrating your body, moving your body a little, eating meals mindfully, going to sleep early, and following these simple habits consistently, it helps you create a foundation for a healthy lifestyle.

These habits may appear small, but they can have a drastic impact on your overall well-being.

Yes, lifestyle change can not be a substitute for herbal treatments or medicines. Herbs and herbal treatments can have side effects too. So, these treatments should be considered as per the doctor’s advice.

There should be a balance between herbal treatments and a healthy lifestyle; only this combination can help you to build a foundation for a healthy lifestyle.

Conclusion

Ayurveda is more than herbs, oils, and traditional remedies. It focuses on how our daily activities influence the way of our living or overall well-being.

Our routine, sleep patterns, eating habits, and the way we manage stress seem to be an ordinary part of life, but together they make a foundation for your overall health, well-being, and quality of life.

The good thing is that, for a healthy life, you do not need to transform your entire lifestyle. You just need to focus on your daily activities by doing them appropriately. Small changes such as managing your sleep cycle, stress, and eating habits, etc. can make a big difference in your overall well-being.
