Laptop on the Sofa: Why Neck and Hip Stiffness Show Up Later

Information By Dr. Mukesh Sharma     Medically Reviewed by Dr.Partap Chauhan

Working on the sofa for a long time feels like heaven. You do not want to sit at a desk for long. It's like a perfect setup relaxed and comfortable but have you ever noticed that when you get up after finishing work, your neck feels tight, your hips feel stiff, and your back does not feel relaxed? Does not it sound strange?

Why does this happen? The thing that is making you feel comfortable is giving you stiffness in the end?

You are not alone; many people end up like this, and this could be possible because of bad posture, prolonged sitting, and the way your body adapts to the soft surface.

Why Does Sitting On A Sofa Make Your Body Feel Stiff?

Sitting on a sofa for a long period of time can make your neck feel stiff because it is something that is made for resting. Its design is meant to provide relaxation to your body; it cannot offer the support your body needs for work. Its soft cushion pulls you down; it does not provide enough support for your body.

When you work on the sofa, your neck bends down, your shoulders slouch while viewing the screen, and your back struggles; staying in the same position for long periods of time creates stiffness in your body.

Initially, you feel comfortable working while sitting on the sofa, but later this may leave you in discomfort.

Your Neck Works Harder

When you sit on the sofa and place your laptop on your lap or on the coffee table, your screen ends up being significantly below your eye level. This will make you uncomfortable, forcing you to keep your neck bent downwards; consequently, the muscles in your neck and shoulders will remain active for an extended period, leading to muscle fatigue, tiredness, and stiffness.

You will not feel this way initially, but when you stand up, you will feel, “Why is your neck feeling so stiff?”

Your Hips Feel Stiff Too

When we work while sitting on the sofa, it puts a strain on our hips as well. This happens because sofas are designed for relaxation, not for work.
When you sit on a soft cushion, it pulls your pelvic bone downwards; your knees remain bent, and there is barely any movement in the muscles and tissues around your hips.

Sitting like this for a long time can make your hips feel stiff.

What Can You Do If You Prefer Working On The Sofa?

Working on the sofa is not wrong, so calling the sofa the villain is not valid. Working while sitting on the sofa is not wrong; what is wrong is staying in the same position for a long time. So, you don't need to change your favorite and perfect sofa setup; you can work in your perfect sofa setup. You just need to adopt some small habits to avoid neck and hip stiffness.

The simple habits to avoid neck and hip stiffness are:

Raise your laptop: Instead of keeping your laptop on your lap, place it on a surface that aligns with your eye level so you don't have to bend your neck downwards.

Support your lower back: Put a cushion behind your lower back so that your lower back gets support and it does not make you uncomfortable later.

Keep your feet supported: Make sure your feet are in a comfortable position instead of a twisted or awkward position.

Change your position: Do not wait until your back starts hurting; take a break every 30–60 minutes, get up and move around so you do not stay in the same position for too long.

Small adjustments surprisingly make big differences.

Ayurvedic Perspective On Prolonged Sitting And Stiffness

As per Ayurveda, movement and balance are important for maintaining overall well-being.

As per Ayurveda, stiffness occurs due to the imbalance of Vata Dosha; Vata Dosha governs movement, dryness, and lightness in the body.

Sitting for a prolonged period increases the Vata Dosha that is the reason why our body feel stiff. This happens because  Vata has dry and rough qualities; it decreases the natural moisture of the joints and tissues. Its dry nature causes tissues in our body to contract, which makes them less flexible and tight.

This happens due to poor digestion as well; toxins (Ama)  in our body are produced due to weak digestion. When they travel through the body and combine with Vata, they settle in our joints; that is the reason for stiffness and a painful feeling

When your routine is highly stressful, involving long hours of work and prolonged sitting, it leads to stiffness and physical discomfort, leaving your body feeling tense and unrelaxed. So, Ayurveda focuses on a routine that allows us to manage our busy schedules without developing stiffness.
Simple practices such as gentle stretching and light walks, applying warm oil, and following a balanced routine will help you if you have to sit and work for long periods.

Ayurveda does not offer a single magical remedy to instantly eliminate stiffness; instead, it advises improving your daily lifestyle. It focuses on your routine (dincharya), how long you work, how much you move, how much you sleep, and how you balance your routine.

Conclusion

Working from the sofa may feel comfortable at first, but staying in the same position for long hours can leave your neck, hips, and back feeling stiff later. The good news is that you do not have to leave your perfect spot;  with just a few changes, your body can settle into its perfect sofa setup. By raising your laptop, doing gentle stretches, moving slowly, and supporting your lower back, these kinds of changes will help prevent your neck and hips from becoming stiff later. As per Ayurveda, following a simple routine and giving your body proper movement and gentle care makes your body feel comfortable and relaxed. So there is no need to leave your perfect sofa setup; only a few movements can save your neck and hips from becoming stiff.
