Why Sweet Cravings Often Show Up After a Salty Meal?

Information By Dr. Keshav Chauhan     Medically Reviewed by Dr.Partap Chauhan

Have you ever finished a salty-spicy meal and felt like eating something sweet right after it? Maybe some chocolate, ras-malai, gulab-jamun, any mithai, or just sugar.

We all may have this feeling of eating sweet just after our lunch or dinner, but we never try to understand the reason behind it: why is it happening in the first place?

Sweet cravings after a meal are quite normal. They can be related to a person’s taste preferences, eating habits, meal preferences, or stress factors. But if it is too often or too frequent, then it can be a matter of concern.

Why Do We Get Sweet Cravings Right After Eating A Salty Meal?

If someone feels like eating something sweet after a meal, there can be the following reasons behind it:

  • You just want a different taste: It’s human nature; when we eat something spicy or salty at lunch or dinner, our body starts craving something sweet just after it in order to get a different taste.
  • It may have become your habit: When a person eats something sweet daily just after a meal, then it can become his/her habit. This can happen to anyone because when we make something a part of our lives, then we start craving it daily.
  • You don’t feel satisfied enough after having your meal: If you don’t feel satisfied after your lunch or dinner, then a feeling may come to your mind about eating something sweet right after it because your brain does not feel satisfied enough with the food you ate.
  • You may be tired or stressed: When you feel too tired or too stressed, you may also have a feeling to eat something sweet.
  • You may have had no or a bit of sweet during the day: Our body also needs something sweet to maintain its sugar levels in the body; if you don’t eat anything sweet during the day, then your body may also start craving the same later.

If you feel like eating sweet occasionally, then the above can be the reason for the same.

Is It Normal To Crave Sweet Just After A Salty Meal?

Yes, it is completely normal to crave sweet just after a meal, only if you get it occasionally. If someone is eating a dessert to balance their cravings, then it will not cause them any harm.

It becomes a concern when someone gets these too frequently or has any medical condition, so it becomes necessary for a person to understand the difference between the two situations.

Signs When It Is Normal

If this is normal, then you may feel the following about it, and you do not need to worry about it:

  • It happens to you occasionally.
  • You can control your sugar cravings easily or even ignore them.
  • A very small portion satisfies you easily.
  • You don’t feel anxious or distressed if you don't eat it; you feel completely normal even when you don’t eat it.
  • You don’t have any changes in your appetite or hunger.

When It Is A Matter Of Concern?

You may have the following signs when it is not normal to have sweet cravings after eating a meal:

  • You feel very thirsty and want to drink a lot afterward.
  • You go to the bathroom frequently.
  • You cannot control your sweet cravings even after a lot of effort.
  • You need big portions and have no control over them.
  • You notice weight changes.
  • You notice sudden changes in your food habits.
  • You get stressed or feel anxious if you don't get anything to eat or something sweet.

If someone is getting the above signals, then they must not ignore them and talk to a doctor immediately.

Which Medical Conditions Can Also Be The Reason Behind It?

When it is not normal, the following medical conditions may be associated with it:

Diabetes or Insulin Resistance: If a person is suffering from diabetes or has an unstable insulin response, then they may crave sugar as well. Also, it can be an early warning sign that a person may have diabetes.

Gut Microbiome Imbalances: It happens when harmful bacteria damage or affect good bacteria in your gut. If a person has a gut microbiome imbalance in him then they may also have a strong desire for sweets after meals.

Reactive hypoglycemia: It is a drop in blood sugar that happens within hours after eating a meal, which also makes a person have strong urges for eating sweet after meals.

If you are going through the above medical conditions, then you must go to the doctor and talk about the same before anything serious happens to you.

What Are The Ayurvedic Views On It?

In Ayurveda, craving for sweets is referred to as Madhura Rasa, which can happen due to an imbalance in the internal system of a person. It generally happens when Vata dosha ( which is an Ayurvedic energy responsible for air and movement in the body) is imbalanced; it usually happens when a person takes too much stress, has anxiety issues, and has an irregular routine.

We all have a fire in our stomach, which is called digestive fire, which is responsible for processing food in our body. When it gets weak, it can also create an imbalance in the body.

What Can You Eat When You Want Something Sweet?

Here is where the main question comes in: you don't have to go for unhealthy options in order to satisfy your sweet cravings:

  • A bowl of fresh fruits
  • Dry fruits such as almonds, walnuts, or cashews
  • Homemade desserts with less sugar
  • Unsweetened or lightly sweetened options according to the need

How Can You Reduce Sweet Cravings After Meals?

You can follow the steps below in order to reduce sweet cravings after meals:

  • Eat a balanced diet: Add enough fibre, proteins, and healthy fats to your plate, so that your body does not crave things that are unhealthy for you.
  • Drink enough water: Keep yourself hydrated daily by drinking enough water to keep your body properly balanced throughout the day.
  • Get enough sleep: Poor sleep can cause many health related probems in a person. Sleep for 7-8 hours daily to give your body proper rest.
  • Avoid unprocessed-refined food: Do not eat burgers, chips, chocolates, or anything that is unprocessed and refined, as they can be harmful for your body.
  • Manage stress: Try to avoid taking stress and do meditation and breathing exercises in order to reduce it and feel calm.
  • Exercise daily: You don’t have to lift heavy weights in the gym; just go for a 30-minute walk, do some cardio at home, and keep yourself active.

By following these simple steps, you can actually control or manage your sweet cravings to an extent.

Conclusion

If a person gets sweet cravings after eating a salty meal occasionally, then it can be normal. But if this happens too frequently, and the person is not able to control it, doesn't get satisfied with a small portion, faces weight changes, etc then it can be a matter of concern. As it can be linked to diabetes, blood sugar fluctuations, or gut microbiome imbalances.

It can be managed if a person takes a balanced diet, stays hydrated, sleeps properly, avoids junk food, manages stress, and exercises daily. Even if a person feels like eating something sweet, then he necessarily don’t have to go for fancy options, can eat something made at home that is healthy.
