These days, everyone is becoming health-conscious.

Nowadays, every man and woman is focusing on working out and on their health. A term has been introduced: 'fasted workout'. But is it a fasted, intense workout for everyone?

Fasted intense exercise was originally tested on men. It is not good for every woman. Doing high-intensity exercise on an empty stomach is not good for women; it can do more harm than good.

What Is Fasted Intense Exercise?

Fasted intense exercise means pushing your body to its fullest limit. It simply means doing a hard and fast workout on an empty stomach, 8 to 10 hours after you have your last meal or first thing in the morning.

Fasted intense exercise is generally not bad for health, but make sure to eat something to fuel your body before a heavy workout; doing fast-paced exercise on an empty stomach can cause a negative reaction and make you feel dizzy.

Many experts advise against it because performing it can have more negative effects on your body rather than good effects.

Reasons why it can be harmful to your body are:

  • Your body is empty at that time, the fuel you need to perform the fast paced exercise is not available to perform the exercise.
  • Your body needs energy during a heavy workout, but due to an empty stomach, your body can not provide enough energy, so it starts destroying your muscles.
  • Those heavy and hard exercises make you feel dizzy, weak, or sluggish and increase the chance of fainting and injuring yourself.
  • Fasting during intense workouts spikes the stress hormone in your body, which lowers your immunity.

An intense workout is not that bad; performing it on an empty stomach is harmful to your health. So, make sure you fuel your body enough 30 to 60 minutes before your exercise.

This ensures your muscles get enough energy to perform those exercises.

How Does It Affect Women?

Generally, fast, intense exercise is good for health, but doing it too much and pushing your body to its fullest limit without proper food and rest can seriously cause health issues for women, as women’s bodies are different, their hormones are different, and they react strongly without food.

Women’s bodies react differently.

It can affect women in several ways:

  • When a woman performs fast, intense exercise without having enough calories in their body, her brain receives a stress signal, and they went to survival mode, and it stops producing reproductive hormones, which leads to irregular periods and fertility issues.
  • Intense exercise drops your estrogen level; estrogen protects women’s bone strength. A drop in estrogen level leads to loss of bone density, and it increases the risk of fractures. Something we need to avoid while training.
  • It will increase the chances of gaining weight and stress, as intense workouts spike cortisol, which is also a stress hormone. Constantly performing heavy workouts without getting enough rest leads to a slower metabolism and storing fat around the stomach.
  • Men and women burn energy differently; women burn fat more easily with moderate-paced exercise; intense workouts reduce the sugar stored in their muscles, leading to increased fatigue, anxiety, and sleep problems.

Rather than performing heavy and intense workouts, women can perform moderate-paced activities like aerobics to burn more calories efficiently.

Who Can Perform It Safely?

Generally, heavy and intense exercise on an empty stomach is not recommended for every woman, because women’s bodies react differently. But some women can do this, and they are:

  • Women who have gone through menopause, as their hormones do not fluctuate due to periods, can tolerate fasted exercise better, but they need to consume enough protein to protect their muscles.
  • Women who perform low-intensity exercises, as their cortisol is balanced.
  • Metabolically healthy women, whose stress level is managed and whose periods are regular, can manage shorter fasted exercises.

Mainly, you need to fuel your body enough. You do not need a heavy breakfast; just 100 to 150 calories is enough to signal your brain that it is safe to burn energy and perform at a high level. You need to consume these calories 30 to 60 minutes before your workout.

How To Avoid The Risk?

Fasted intense exercise is not good for every woman, but it can be performed by certain women with certain precautions. It is complicated because it is performed on an empty stomach. An empty stomach causes complications; it spikes cortisol and causes dizziness.

Intense exercise is not bad for health, but performing it on an empty stomach is bad. You do not need to eat a heavy breakfast to perform this; you just need to fuel enough calories to signal your brain that now it's safe for exercise.

How To Avoid The Risk?

  • You need to eat 30 to 60 minutes before the exercise. No need to eat a heavy breakfast, just a small snack of 150 calories that combines protein and carbohydrates.
  • Keep your body hydrated. A glass of water before exercise works.
  • Keep the duration of exercise short.
  • Try to change the timing of your exercise; avoid it in the morning.
  • Make sure that you eat enough protein after the workout to nourish your body and muscles.

Ayurvedic Perspective

From an Ayurvedic perspective, Intense exercise on an empty stomach is not a good idea for every woman, as fasting and exercise are different in their own place; combining them can disturb the delicate balance of hormones and energy in women’s bodies.

It imbalances the Vata and Pitta doshas and slows down the digestive fire (Agni) in the women’s body.

The core rules of Ayurvedic fitness are:

  • Ayurveda says that one should only exercise half of their total capacity until they notice mild sweat around their nose, forehead, or underarms and slightly heavy breathing.
  • Ayurveda pays attention to morning movement (dinacharya), but it does not promote heavy exercise on an empty stomach. It increases the Vata dosha and has a severe impact on  Agni (digestive fire).

Conclusion

Fasted intense exercise is not a good idea for every woman; heavy workouts on an empty stomach is not good for woman health. It is more harmful than good. Working out on an empty stomach leads to irregular periods, fertility problems, and lowers bone density. So it is better to perform low-to-moderate exercise, or if a woman wants to perform high-intensity exercise, then she needs to have a light breakfast to signal her brain that it's safe to exercise now.

Next time, if you wish to perform intense exercise, make sure that you have eaten enough calories to make your body support that energy.
