What Does Grade 3 Fatty Liver Test Mean?
Grade 3 fatty liver (Yakrit Roga) is also known as ‘Severe Hepatic Steatosis’. It is the final stage of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) that can impact your overall health and even cause permanent liver damage. It occurs when an excess amount of fat (Meda) accumulates in the liver cells.
This stage affects the liver’s functional ability. Up to 66% or more fat accumulates in the liver in grade 3 and can be detected through ultrasound, where the liver may appear enlarged (hepatomegaly), inflamed, and extremely bright. It is the most advanced stage of fatty liver and can affect the liver’s functional ability and, in extreme cases, cause scarring (fibrosis), cirrhosis, and even liver damage or permanent tissue damage.
This stage is harder to treat and requires strict medical treatment.
What It Can And Cannot Prove
It can prove:
It cannot prove:
There is severe fat accumulation; fat infiltrates more than 66% of liver tissue (parenchyma)
That you have liver fibrosis, advanced scarring, or cirrhosis
High risk for metabolic complications, inflammation, and fibrosis.
The permanent liver damage has already occurred.
The condition needs serious medical evaluation and lifestyle changes.
The exact cause of fat accumulation such as metabolic factors, medications, or alcohol.
Further assessment may be needed to check for inflammation, liver function, and fibrosis risk.
The exact amount of fibrosis or liver stiffness is based on ultrasound reports.
Common Reasons For The Finding
The most common reasons for grade 3 fatty liver include:
- Obesity
- Type 2 diabetes
- Unhealthy diet
- Sedentary lifestyle
- High cholesterol
- Excessive Alcohol
- Chronic infection with hepatitis C
How Grade-3 Relates To Fatty Liver Disease
According to Ayurveda, Grade 3 fatty liver (Yakrit Roga) is seen as the combination of Medoroga (fat metabolism disorder) and Srotorodha (channel blockages). The root cause of Grade 3 fatty liver is an imbalance of Agni (digestive fire), which leads to incomplete digestion that produces Ama (toxins). With time and no improvement, Ama aggravates the Kapha dosha and corrupts Meda Dhatu (fat tissue), creating dense tissue blockages in the liver.
Ayurveda can help manage the severity of grade 3 fatty liver with different herbs and a detoxification process; results may vary and require careful medical supervision.
Can Grade 3 Fatty Liver Improve?
Excess fat accumulation leads to discomfort in the abdomen; clinical examination may show an enlarged liver, and ignorance and too much fat buildup can cause hepatitis. Grade 3 fatty liver is the most dangerous because it is impossible to restore the liver’s original state as before. This leaves many complications even with the proper treatment. Untreated severe fatty liver can cause long-term or permanent tissue damage. Ayurveda suggests that fat accumulation can be improved through Ayurvedic management, a strict diet, and healthy lifestyle changes. Proper treatment reduces the risk of fibrosis and cirrhosis in the liver. If you are diagnosed with grade 3 fatty liver, then you should consult with Jiva’s health expert today.
What To Review Next With A Doctor
Just like grade 1 and 2, you should discuss advanced liver fibrosis staging, metabolic risk factors, and structured lifestyle goals with your doctor in grade 3 fatty liver disease. You should discuss these topics to get a better understanding with your doctor:
- Fibrosis evaluation
- Current enzyme levels
- Blood sugar levels, HbA1c, and lipid profile
- Weight loss plan to reduce liver inflammation
- Medications and supplements
- Management of dosha imbalance
- Fitness plans
Monitoring And Follow-Up
In Ayurveda, fatty liver is associated with Agni (digestive fire), Ama (toxins), Meda (fat tissue), and advanced stages require regular monitoring alongside lifestyle and medical evaluation. This helps in maintaining a healthy lifestyle:
- Monitor digestion (Agni): Monitor appetite, digestion, bloating, heaviness, bowel habits, and other digestive factors.
- Manage metabolic health: Keep track of weight, waist circumference and dietary habits, especially excess oily, processed, and sugary foods.
- Yakrit assessment: Regular medical tests like LFTs and liver imaging should be used to monitor liver status.
- Ayurvedic medicines: Any herbs or formulations should be prescribed by a certified Ayurvedic physician after assessing the Prakriti, doshas, and overall health.
- Maintain lifestyle: Maintain regular meal and sleep timings, adequate physical activity, and avoid overeating.
- Follow-up: Regular follow-ups help assess changes in symptoms, metabolic health, and liver parameters and allow the Ayurvedic plan to be adjusted accordingly.
Red Flags: When To Seek Medical Care.
Seek immediate Jiva Ayurveda’s help if you have grade 3 fatty liver disease and experience this, because it can be dangerous and cause complications like cirrhosis or liver failure if left untreated:
- Jaundice or a yellow tint in the sclera (white part) of your eyes.
- Severe Abdominal pain OR TENDERNESS IN THE UPPER RIGHT side of the abdomen.
- Sudden swelling in legs and ankles
- Extreme drowsiness, unusual confusion, or sleep deprivation
- Vomiting blood and pale stools
- Easy bruising or unusual bleeding from minor cuts.
