Can Irregular Meal Times Make Healthy Food Feel Harder to Digest?

Information By Dr. Keshav Chauhan     Medically Reviewed by Dr.Partap Chauhan

Eating a full plate of lentils, vegetables, or whole grains can sound good for your body. But they still can leave you feeling bloated, stuffed, or uncomfortable.

Why? Because it's not only about what you eat, but also about when you eat. Your body needs a healthy routine. But eating your meal at unpredictable times can make it harder for your stomach to process it. Large portions of food take longer to process; that's why the time you spend eating is very important.

What Happens When You Eat At Irregular Times Daily?

One day, you have your breakfast at 8 am, lunch at 1 pm, and dinner at 7 pm.

The next day, you eat your breakfast at 10 am, lunch at 4 pm, and dinner at 9 pm.

This shuffling keeps on happening every day, and there is no fixed time for any of your meals any day. Irregular meal timings not only result in a disturbance of body rhythm, but also have a huge impact on the appetite and digestion of a person.

When a person has a late breakfast, then he will naturally eat his lunch late, and when the lunch is late, the dinner will also be delayed, which can cause bloating, gas, and acidity in a person. Because the food takes time to process, and when you shuffle your meal times daily like this, it will be affected and can cause digestive problems in a person.

What Are The Effects Of Eating Food At Irregular Times Daily?

Even if you are eating healthy, it can affect you negatively if the timings are not regular daily. Some common effects of wrong eating habits include:

Fluctuating appetite or hunger: If one has irregular meal timing, it can severely affect a person’s appetite.

Acidity and bloating: If someone eats late at night, then the food will not get time to process properly; later it can cause acidity and bloating in a person.

Weight gain: If a person skips any meal during the day, then it can result in overeating later, which can cause weight gain, especially around the belly.

Poor bowel regularity: Our digestive system relies on a natural body clock and predictable signals to keep things moving; when it gets affected due to irregular food habits, it can be affected.

Indigestion or heartburn: It can cause heartburn or indigestion because when you eat at unpredictable times, your system gets confused and makes excess acid.

Feeling sluggish after meals: You start feeling lazy after meals because irregular meals disrupt your internal clock and your blood sugar patterns.

Mood fluctuations and irritability: A person tends to feel easily irritated and can have mood swings or difficulty concentrating because erratic meal timings cause blood sugar drops, which causes the brain to release stress hormones such as cortisol and adrenaline.

Poor sleep: It can also lead to disruption in the sleep cycle because when you eat late at night, it keeps your digestive system active in order to process that meal.

Importance Of Digestion Fire (Agni) In Ayurveda

In Ayurveda, digestion is considered the core life force of the body that controls metabolism, transformation, and overall health of an individual. It is believed that there is a fire burning inside our stomach, which is known as digestive fire, Agni in Ayurveda, which is important for the processing of food. If it gets weak, then the rhythm of the body gets affected, which can cause digestive-related problems in the body. If a person has irregular meal timings, then it will also be affected and can affect the overall health of the body. So it is advised to eat properly balanced meals at proper timings in order to keep it strong.

How Does Ayurveda View Regular Meal Timing?

In Ayurveda, food is considered the ultimate medicine for curing any type of disease. But with food, there is also utmost importance of meal timing, to keep our body properly balanced and our digestion process active. Ayurveda follows the sun’s natural cycle to keep the timings properly balanced and take all the benefits from a healthy meal.

Breakfast: Ayurveda believes that it must be between 7 am and 9 am, which includes light and warm food that can keep you full until lunch also.

Lunch: Ayurveda says that this is the time when our digestive fire is strongest, and it is called the main meal of the day, which can be around 12 pm to 2 pm. At lunch, add a good amount of protein, carbs, and healthy fats to your plate.

Dinner: At night, our digestion fire slows down a bit, so it is recommended to eat light food at night, and that must be between 6 pm and 8 pm, so that your stomach has time to process it before you go to bed.
